WATER
Beer contains almost only water. It is therefore extremely important, to get a good beer, to have a water which is suitable for brewing.
MALT AND ADJUNCTS
Malt is grain which has germinate until the germ has reached a certain length. The germ is then removed and the grain is dried and roasted to the right color. The base malt used is always light barley malt, but all four seeds can be used. Other extract sources are called adjuncts. Examples are eg. sugar, rice and maize.
HOPS
Hops give beer bitterness, but also taste and aroma, which many do not know. Wort (the liquid from the macerated malt) are boiled together with the hops. Hops added early in the kitchen gives mostly bitterness and hops added at the end, also gives flavor and aroma.
YEAST
To convert the wort to beer, it must be fermented. Yeast gives the beer a lot of character and two different types of yeast can give two completely different beers, though other ingredients are the same.
